Some children struggle to grasp the basics at Primary School or Prep School, particularly in English and Mathematics, for many different reasons. We offer tailored, fun tutoring, based on both traditional and contemporary educational methods, to ensure that pupils have a solid grounding in essential subjects. This also ensures that pupils feel confident when it comes to the statutory exams at the end of Year 6.
At Secondary School, students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning; many find this very difficult to do, especially if they have not had sufficient grounding in particular subjects. Not only does Quintain Tutoring help pupils to fill in the gaps, but also teaches them to apply themselves to independant learning.
Many parents choose to send their children to the QT 10 Plus Club, whilst they are in Year 4, to ensure that they have the complete grounding in all areas before moving onto the Year 5, 11 Plus Club. This means that students have all the necessary knowledge to start on the 11 Plus work, rather than spending time trying to "catch up." Please see the pages concerning our QT 10 Plus Clubs.
Quintain Tutoring has been helping pupils pass the 11 Plus for over 14 years.
Pupils are initially assessed, through comprehension, spelling, grammar and mathematics tests, to see if they are eligible for grammar school. Results are given in an informal meeting with both parent/s and pupil. If pupils continue with the 11 Plus course, then they are taught through a series of structured lessons in English (comprehension, grammar, spelling, punctuation and writing), Mathematics, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Spacial Reasoning. Pupils also have the choice of sitting mock exams from Easter onwards, in preparation for the actual exams in September.

Many Public Schools now require a student to apply up to three years in advance of the actual intended date of entry. Applications are usually accepted if the pupil has passed both an interview and internal pre-tests (often comprising English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning) and after a satisfactory report from the Head of the Primary/Prep School has been given.
Quintain Tutoring supports pupils in both their application, pre-tests and interview and then the work leading up to passing the Common Entrance exams themselves. Pupils are given structured lessons, designed to boost their understanding, but also to support pupils in their personalised learning and revision.
"You have been an amazing tutor throughout every lesson I have had. Thank you for preparing me for the pre-test and the Common Entrance. I have learnt SO much - and I passed!"
After understanding the level that the student requires, tutors give a structured course, covering the main areas of the English language. The course is tailored to suit the student and is usually on a one-to-one basis, either in your own home or via e-tutoring. Please see the Online Tutoring section for details or call 01732 845177.
Throughout every tutoring session, students are given instant verbal feedback and support to enhance their learning. Similarly, at the end of every tutoring session, parents are given verbal feedback about the areas that have been covered and how they, or the student's school, can help to support the learning. At the end of every term (10-12 weeks), the tutor will provide a brief, written report of all of the areas covered and the next steps for on-going tutoring.
